The homepage is a mood board with a GitHub badge.

app-echo.net, chat-echo.com, and the README make a stack of promises: privacy, anonymity, AGPL you can inspect, native apps, version 1.0.0. The legal docs, the mirror policy, and Adel’s own review contradict them.

FALSE No ID verification, ever

Said on the live homepage feature card: “We don’t ask for your ID.” “Join freely and stay anonymous. No ID verification, ever.”

Found in Terms of Service, effective 28 June 2026, section 2: they allow minors where the law permits. If they cannot “reasonably verify required consent or eligibility,” they may “require age/consent verification (including additional information from a parent/guardian where applicable)” and “suspend or terminate the account until eligibility or consent is confirmed.” The privacy policy, section 10, repeats the same lever. “Ever” lasted until the contract.

FALSE Privacy-focused communication platform

Said in the FAQ: “Echo is an open source, privacy-focused communication platform.” README: “Privacy and consent by design.” Why Echo: “clear boundaries for data, sessions, and what the server is allowed to assume about users.”

Found in the privacy policy:

Privacy-minded, if you mean TLS and a Kleingewerbe in Germany. Confidential from the operator: no. Privacy page.

FALSE Public development happens on GitHub

Said in docs/DEVELOPMENT.md: “Clone from GitHub (public development and issues/PRs use GitHub only).” README: contributions, issues, and pull requests on GitHub. Marketing: “browse the code on GitHub.”

Found in AGENTS.md and docs/operations/github-release-mirror.md:

GitHub API, 20 September 2026: one listed contributor (ad3lre), zero releases, 45 stars, 3 forks. The Issues tab is Dependabot. You can read a snapshot. You cannot read how it got there.

FALSE Download Echo for Windows, macOS, and Linux (Stable)

Said on /download: Windows “Stable,” native app, system notifications, auto-start. macOS “Stable,” native menus, universal build. Linux “Stable,” AppImage and .deb, system tray, auto-updater. “Get Echo on any device.”

Found in marketing/src/pages/download.astro: every desktop href is CHAT_APP_ORIGIN, which is https://chat-echo.com. The web app. Adel’s EDAR for Echo, August 2026: “Echo is only out as a Web platform, while in theory you can download the source code and compile the Tauri for which ever platform you want, there is a reason it hasn’t been officially released.” Apple README: iOS is “the first shipping target.” GitHub lists no releases.

The badge says Stable. The button opens a browser.

STRETCHED Version 1.0.0, installable where your users are

Said in package.json: version 1.0.0. GitHub created the public repo on 14 May 2026. README: PWA plus native Apple apps, “more platforms to follow.” FAQ: open in the browser or download the app.

Found in docs/reviews/STATUS_AND_PRODUCTION_READINESS.md (1 June 2026): Horizon A (text MVP) about 90 to 95 percent. Horizon B (full-feature) about 52 to 62 percent. Voice / SFU about 37 percent. Layer 2 voice intelligence: 0 percent. Discord import: 58 percent. Adel’s own Readiness score: 1 out of 9. Popularity: 0 out of 3, “ghost town,” “single digits.” Platform parity: 0 out of 3.

1.0.0 is a git tag. It is not a finished Discord replacement. He said so, in public, while scoring himself.

STRETCHED You own your deployment

Said in the README: “no mandatory third-party control plane; configure auth, storage, voice, and edge the way your threat model requires.” Self-host, fork, AGPL.

Found in Adel’s own centralisation rubric, posted with the Echo EDAR: Echo scores 0 out of 3. You can run an independent instance, but “there is no way to connect those instances to the main network.” “One entity has complete control.” The hosted product at chat-echo.com is that entity. Self-hosting a fork does not join the people already on chat-echo.com. The threat model for the hosted app is still “trust the operator with every message.”

FALSE A team, with CODEOWNERS

Said in the privacy policy: “operated by the team behind app-echo.net.” FAQ uses “we.” Adel’s r/SaaS post: “me and a couple of friends.” CODEOWNERS lists paths and no GitHub handles.

Found: GitHub contributors API returns ad3lre only. Legal form: Kleingewerbe, a German small-business registration used by sole traders. The Adel Approval Poll on the official marketing site is named after one person. Security policy: maintainers acknowledge reports “as capacity allows; there is no SLA.”

STRETCHED Serious engineering guardrails

Said in the README: contract tests, RBAC and snowflake guards in CI, “progress is inspectable, not hand-wavy.” Adel on Reddit, answering a critic: the critic has “a claude max subscription and no job” inverted, in the critic’s words, back at Adel. Adel’s reply to “You should just stop using Claude”: “Thank you for your feedback.”

Found in the same repo: root AGENTS.md, a contributor/agent charter, an llm-testing GitHub repo under the same account, a Linux-kernel-inspired code charter tracking hundreds of thousands of lines, and a “god-file ratchet” so generated files do not grow. The SaaS origin story is a Discord bot, then a 476k-LOC chat platform. Guardrails around agents are still agent work.

FALSE Self-promotion is not allowed

Said in Community Guidelines, 3 June 2026: “Self-promotion, advertising, or unsolicited marketing is not allowed on the platform.” Bots that simulate user activity are forbidden unless authorized. Alt accounts are not allowed.

Found on Reddit: u/ad3lyt posted Echo launch threads to r/DiscordAlternatives, r/BannedFromDiscord, r/guilded, r/chat_echo, r/discordapp, and r/SaaS. He posted “Has anyone tried out Echo?” with an empty body. He posted EDAR reviews of competitors and a ranking site. He posted “Is Echo a secure discord alternative that can be trusted?” about his own product. The guidelines apply to users of Echo. The marketing plan applies to Reddit.
